Risk Of Infection, Don't Enter These 4 Places As Cases Surge, Say Experts | USA EXPRESS AFFAIRS

USA EXPRESS AFFAIRS- The BA.5 subvariant is causing an increase in new cases across the United States, despite previous immunity from infection and vaccination. So, how can people keep themselves safe? "People who were infected three months ago were seeing high levels of reinfections," says Dr. Ashish Jha, White House COVID Response Coordinator.

"We're seeing a lot of breakthrough infections in people who haven't been boosted in a while and haven't gotten a vaccine shot in a while." Here are four locations that virus experts recommend you avoid during this new wave of infections. Even if people wear masks, crowded indoor restaurants and bars pose a high risk of spreading the virus "Outside is more secure than inside.

It does not imply that the risk is zero; rather, ventilation makes it safer "Sabrina Assoumou, MD, MPH, concurs. "If you're in a crowded outdoor area, your risk increases, so try to avoid it as much as possible.
And if you're in a crowd, this is the time to pull out your mask. If you're with a small group of people indoors, open the windows and get some fresh air. Wear a high-quality mask when the number of cases is increasing. That's how we're all going to get through this. There are numerous things we could do to feel more connected."

We now know that COVID-19 spreads easily through droplets and aerosol particles, and gyms are especially dangerous in this regard. "Vigorous exercise produces a lot of particles in the air and very small droplets that waft in the air, increasing the likelihood that they'll linger around and you'll pick it up," explains Dr. Marissa Levine, director of the Center for Leadership in Public Health Practice at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

"It's especially concerning given the recent outbreaks of disease... If you have a variant that is easily transmitted and there are a lot of them in a small space because people are exercising vigorously, your risk will be higher if you enter that setting."

The CDC no longer tracks virus cases on cruise ships, but warns that they are still high-risk environments for COVID-19. "Cruise ships have made tremendous changes to try to accommodate COVID," says Jonathan Franklin, co-author of Cabin Fever: The Harrowing Journey of a Cruise Ship at the Dawn of a Pandemic.

"However, the fact that airborne viruses love cruise ships cannot be changed. During our investigation, we spoke with CDC officials who stated that the most efficient machine for spreading COVID among 2,000 people would resemble a cruise ship."

According to studies, a significant amount of COVID-19 spread in hospitals is caused by patients infecting one another. "The fact that the vast majority of infections were between patients suggests that hospital staff measures to prevent staff transmitting the virus to patients, such as mask use, were likely effective," says Christopher Illingworth, PhD.

"However, it also emphasizes the importance of patients being screened for COVID-19 on a regular basis, even if they are asymptomatic, and wearing face masks whenever possible."

Virus experts warn that the number of BA.5 cases is likely much higher than we know due to at-home testing. "Wastewater data is very useful, and the beauty of wastewater is that it does not rely on people being tested," Dr. Assoumou says.

"Right now, the amount of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is increasing. Nowadays, so much testing is done at home via rapid testing that is not recorded in case counts. I'm glad people are testing at home to determine their status so they can isolate, but the downside is that we haven't been able to capture those [results].

Some [research] estimates that the number of cases is three times higher than what we see, while others say it is seven or eight times higher "And, in order to protect your life and the lives of others, avoid visiting any of these 35 places.
